This is a one day course which meets the HSE regulations for Emergency First Aiders in the work place. On successful completion candidates will attain an SQA qualification in Emergency First Aid at Work.
The purpose of this unit is for learners to attain the knowledge and practical competencies required to deal with a range of emergency first aid situations.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider.
- Know how to assess an incident.
- Manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally.
- Manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally.
- Recognise and assist a casualty who is choking.
- Manage a casualty who is in shock.
- Understand how to manage a casualty with a minor injury.
Appointed Person

This is a St Andrews Ambulance one-day course covering the basics in workplace First Aid. On successful completion candidates will attain a St Andrews Ambulance certificate which is valid for 3 years.
Learning Outcomes
- Understanding the role of the First Aider including:
- the importance of preventing cross infection
- the need for recording incidents and actions
- use of available equipment
- Assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
- Administering First Aid to a casualty who is:
- unconscious (including seizure)
- choking
- wounded and bleeding
- suffering from shock
- Administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Providing appropriate First Aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters)
