What is OHSAS 18001 and ISO14001:2004?
OHSAS18001:2007 and ISO14001:2004 are the latest certification specifications for both Occupational Safety & Health and Environmental Management Systems. The specification is based on published criteria such as the Management Regulations 1992, the British Standard 8800 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990. OHSAS 18001:2007 and ISO14001:2004 are certification and audit specifications that can deliver best practise on a continual improvement cycle, not a legislative requirement or a guide to implementation.
Why should Organisations attain certification to OHSAS 18001:2007 and ISO14001:2004 ? Registration to OHSAS18001 and ISO14001:2004 by an independent, third party, UKAS approved certification body demonstrates a commitment to implement, maintain and improve the way in which organisations manage their Health Safety and Environmental systems. Organisations registered to OHSAS18001:2007 and ISO14001:2004 will be able to demonstrate how they meet the requirements of key Health Safety and Environmental legislation by implementation of an effective and structured approach to managing Health Safety and Environment. This can be achieved by the setting of achievable targets through the Health Safety and Environment policy and ongoing measurement against a process of continual improvement.
Assessment to OHSAS18001:2007 and ISO14001:2004
Having chosen a third party UKAS approved body for your Certification audit, DGC Training can support your journey by reviewing your documentation to ascertain that it meets all the standards requirements of OHSAS18001:2007 and ISO14001:2004. This will be facilitated by a qualified and trained Lead OHSAS18001 auditor and ISO14001 system auditors who will provide agreed support days and audit checks to ensure that records are being kept and documented and working practices are being followed. On completion of this Certification support journey the organisation will then be prepared for their Certification stage 1 audit by an independent 3rd Party of their choice. On successful attainment of Certification, DGC Training can also provide support for future surveillance visits (usually once a year) to ensure that the system is maintained and continues to be effective or if your organisation has had their Certification withdrawn we can help facilitation to regaining this.
Joint OHSAS18001:2007 and ISO14001:2004 Systems Certification
There are many common elements between these two management systems, such as document control, management review, evaluation of legal compliance, corrective action and training and competence of personnel. These can be designed into an integrated single system or a combination of any of the above. Support and audit of joint systems is available and may be the best method for some organisations to save overhead costs. Integrated systems can help an organisation internally by reducing duplication and providing a centralised document control system subsequently it may also offer cost benefits for your independent third-party audit process.
